Steps to Increase Your Gut Bacteria
Stop consuming sugary and processed foods as well as most grains. Avoid chlorinated water, antibacterial soaps and chemicals. Antibiotics also destroy gut flora so whenever possible, find a natural alternative instead to handle the condition. Add one or more of the following into your diet: fermented vegetables such as sauerkraut and pickles, kombucha (fermented drink from a mushroom), kefirs from either fermented grains (see recipe below) or dairy, coconut yogurt, miso or kimchi (Korean dish from fermented cabbage). Take a good probiotic supplement for a few months (or longer) to help re-colonize your gut.

You will need to go online and search for “water kefir grains”. It is possible your health food store may have them too. They are very inexpensive (under $20) and will last for years.
What you need:
Water kefir grains
4 c good quality water
1/3 c organic cane sugar (the kefir grains eat the sugar up so the end result is very low sugar)
Large glass jar with tight fitting lid
Dried or fresh organic fruit
Fill the jar with 4 cups of water
Add the sugar and kefir grains
Add a wedge of organic lemon and a few pieces of other types of fruit such as organic peaches, apples, pear, figs, etc. Ginger is excellent too.
Put the lid on tightly Put jar into dark cupboard and let sit 24 – 48 hours.
Strain liquid into another jar (to drink) and dump the fruit.
Keep the kefir grains and repeat the process. The grains must be recycled immediately. They need the sugar and fruit to stay alive. You can adjust the fruit/sugar content to your taste buds once you have made a batch or two.
